Atom Girls on the short end of a thriller
The South Bruce Atom Girls hosted the league leading Saugeen Shores Storm on Saturday at the Mildmay Rec Complex.

The local ladies knew they were in for tough battle with the Storm when they hit the ice.  Saugeen Shores is undefeated in league play and would jump out to an early lead on the third shift of the game, but South Bruce would score two nice goals of their own to finish the first period with a 2-1 lead.

The Storm would come out flying to start the second but some great goaltending by Ashton would keep the opposition from adding to the board.  The Atom girls would kill off a penalty only to have Saugeen score a couple of quick ones midway through to go ahead 3-2 after two.

The third period would see the Atoms kill off another penalty early on and then pour it on with 5 skaters aside.   End-to-end action would provide some great entertainment and both goalies made some tremendous saves to keep their teams pumped for a thrilling finish.  The Storm would score half way through the third to gain a 2 goal lead, but the South Bruce girls were determined to bounce back.  Offensive outbursts have not been the norm for the local girls to date, but they put together a few great shifts scoring with 5:17 and 2:27 left in the third period to notch things up at 4 apiece.  With the excitement in the building rising, the girls were enjoying the competitive atmosphere.  Saugeen's Sky Pomroy would have no part of it and would score her fourth in a row with 1:50 showing on the clock to put the visitors ahead once again.  Desperate for a goal, the South Bruce squad would pull their goalie for an extra attacker and get a glorious breakaway opportunity but couldn't find the back of the net.  Time would eventually run out and Saugeen would secure a well-played 5-4 victory.

For a laid back group of girls, the South Bruce Atoms certainly showed today that they are more than capable of digging in their heels.  It was a great game to watch as both teams competed hard and nobody backed down.  For 35 minutes the local girls showed some true grit on defense, some outstanding goaltending and a glimmer of offensive output that just might be a sign of better things to come.

It's always nice to finish a game with sweat on your brow and a smile on your face.

Great game girls.  Go SB Go!
